Understanding Screw Barrel Selection
Choosing the right screw and barrel combination is critical for achieving optimal output quality, energy efficiency, and equipment longevity in plastic extrusion. The selection depends on several key factors including the polymer being processed, desired throughput, and specific application requirements.
Key Factors in Screw Barrel Selection
1. Material Type
Different polymers require different screw geometries. PVC processing demands specialized screw designs with lower compression ratios to prevent thermal degradation, while polyolefins (PE, PP) work well with general-purpose screws featuring higher compression ratios for efficient melting.
2. Screw Geometry
The L/D ratio (length-to-diameter) determines the processing capacity. Standard ratios range from 20:1 to 36:1. Longer screws provide better mixing and melting uniformity but require more torque and energy.
3. Single vs. Twin Screw
Single screw extruders excel at simple extrusion tasks like pipe and profile production. Twin screw systems — both parallel and conical — are preferred for compounding, mixing, and processing heat-sensitive materials like PVC.
Material Considerations for Screw Barrels
The metallurgy of your screw and barrel directly impacts service life:
- 38CrMoAlA — Standard nitrided steel, suitable for general-purpose processing
- Bimetallic — Centrifugally cast alloy lining for enhanced wear resistance
- Alloy spray welding — Surface coating for extreme abrasion environments (glass fiber, mineral fillers)
